Gerald Casale Interview at Andrew Krasnow's Show | 2006
Founding member of Devo, Gerald Casale introducing the work of Andrew Krasnow at the ADM Gallery in Los Angeles. Andrew's work consists primarily of objects crafted out of tanned human skin. In his defense, Andrew had a surgeon friend of his cut a large piece of skin off of his own back. He tanned it as well and each piece has a cut of his own flesh in it. I won't do his high art a disservice by attempting to describe it, but let's say it is well thought out.
Pris Dancing | 2006
Pris is an old friend of mine who I used to perform with back in the late 90's. She was the bass player for Sexychrist, one of the best LA bands that was on the scene when I was playing with The Pinks. Pris was easily the best dancer in LA, and I would frequently visit Jumbo's just to watch her dance. I would sit at a table with my note pad and just take in the atmosphere. Pris usually danced to Bjork, and it was hypnotizing to watch her move. Jumbo's had an assortment of fantastic dancers. All of them were artists by day, and used the dancing to make a little cash. There were occasionally girl on girl drag shows as well as a tranny performer or two. On any given night you would see writers and artisans talking with each other or with the dancers. The stage was very small, covered in mirrors with constant hand prints, and the songs came out of a jukebox which was filled with sexy music from Sinatra, The Stones, Nina Simone, Bauhaus, Tom Waits, you name it. Sexy dancers, sexy music, sexy crowd. East Hollywood.
Chinese New Year (Los Angeles) | 2005
Chinese New Year, Los Angeles in 2005. This was a lion dancing troupe I follow every year. It is one of the most interesting things that happens throughout the year in LA and San Francisco. This footage is not at a parade. I like the more traditional forms of lion dancing. The tradition is based in purification ritual. It is performed by youth troupes that compete for the honor of purifying a business. There are usually 2 lion dancers, a trixter (masked figure) or two, and percussionists. There are few things as intense as this ritual.
Dan Harvey | 2010
Dan Harvey was in the same MFA program as I at The Ohio State University. He and I collaborated on a number of projects, and this was a sketch piece of him dancing in his studio.
Grandma & Aunt Lil | 2006
This is test footage of both my aunt Lillianne Postiglione and my Grandmother Marie Mascaro in their respective houses. They are portraits. My grandmother is sitting in my first bedroom in her house, which was built in the late 1700's, and my aunt is sitting on the porch of her house. The soundscape was a recording I made of the rain and wind chimes on my aunt's porch.
