During the summer of 2012, I was approached by sculptor Malcolm Cochran about photo documentation of a performance by Nikhil Chopra. Nikhil's piece that was going to be showcased in Finding Time, a program of public art in Columbus, Ohio.
I don't normally want to shoot straight documentary footage for projects I am not connected to personally, but I knew Nikhil's work, and knew what a terrific actor he was. I requested that I be allowed to film the whole process while I shoot the documentation they needed for the program. After a cordial dinner conversation with Nikhil, he agreed to my request.
The reason I was inspired to shoot video of Nikhil is because of his amazing cinematic presence. I first met him at Ann Hamilton's studio for a dinner celebrating his work in 2010, and I remember being struck by his presence. He looks like a living film character. Sensing the opportunity, I said I could shoot the photography on the condition that I was allowed to shoot video of the entire piece, which I would later turn into a film. Nikhil agreed, and as I suspected, I got incredible footage.
Film coming soon.
